- Quality of language: rich vocabulary and detailed description
- Answers are relevant and well developed, with opinions and examples
For me, these are the two main things to focus on if you want to get a higher score in IELTS speaking or writing. If you thought that grammar and linking were the most important things, you need to change your approach!

Questions in part 3 of the speaking test follow on from the topic you were given in part 2. So, after last week's historic event question, you might be asked some further questions about history and events. For example:
1. What do you think we can learn by studying events of the past?
I think we can learn a lot by studying history. Just as individual people learn from their mistakes, societies can learn from the mistakes made by previous governments or leaders. For example, from what I've read in the newspapers, many economists are looking back to the time of the Great Depression, around 80 years ago, in order to understand the financial crisis that is currently affecting many countries around the world. Even if we don't always learn from mistakes, I think it's fascinating to study history because it gives us an insight into who we are and where we come from.
2. What important events do you think might take place in the future?
It's really difficult to predict what will happen in the future; most of the big, historic events of the past would have been impossible to foresee. For example, I don't think that anyone living 100 years ago could have imagined that people would one day walk on the moon! If I had to guess what might happen in the future, I'd like to think that scientists will invent cures for diseases like cancer, and we'll all live longer.
Part 1 style question
Examiner: How would you describe yourself?
Paula: Everyone tells me I take after(像) my mum as I’m quite laid-back(放松随和的) … I think I’m good company(好伙伴) but you should ask my friends if they agree …
Examiner: In which ways are you similar to your friends?
Manuel: I seem to be attracted to introverts(内向的人) … not people who are painfully shy(极端害羞的) but most of my friends are a little reserved(内敛的) … and I think that’s what I’m like …Examiner: Are you similar or different to your brother(s)/sister(s)?
Mira: I think my brother and I are very similar … I’d say we’re fun-loving(爱好玩乐的) and tend to be a bit extroverted(外向的) … my brother is certainly the life and soul of the party(派对活跃分子) … I’m not sure that applies to me …
Part 3 style question
Examiner: Which personal qualities do you think we most want to pass on to our children?
Martin: I certainly would want my children to be self-confident(自信的)and self-assured(自信的) … I really believe that people who feel good about themselves are in a good position to face what life has to offer them … and I’d hope they wouldn’t be self-centred(自我为中心的) … but remembered to think about others …
Examiner: Which characteristics do you think are the least appealing in a person?
Marianne: Well … people who are very narrow-minded(心胸狭窄的) are difficult to get on with … it’s nice when someone is open to other people’s opinion and willing to think about their own views … and people who are two-faced(两面三刀的) can be a little irritating … relationships are built on trust and without honesty there’s not much left …Examiner: Which personality types do you think are less likely to suffer from stress or anxiety?
Sol: Probably people who are thick-skinned(厚脸皮的) … who don’t let people or problems affect them too much … and if you are fair-minded(公正的) you’ ll be less likely to overreact to situations or be quick-tempered(容易发脾气的) …
