①Never are sports events failing to attract our eyes in the contemporary society. It is widely accepted that sports events can bring people together, no matter what their origin, background, religious beliefs or economic status are. Yet, there is no garden without weeds. Popular events like the football World Cup are also blame for giving rise to cultural imperialism and tensions between nations. Before voicing my opinion, I would like to explore the hot issue from diverse perspectives.
②Some people are in favor of sports events out of several utilitarian reasons. To begin with, it is self-evident that sports could enhance mutual understanding across divisions of race, culture and gender. An obvious example is that in 2004 Athens Olympic, South and North Koreas participated together and the games thus became a great event for South-North reconciliation. In addition, sports not only strengthen one’s immune system, but also teach competitive awareness, team-work spirit and acceptance of failure, in this sense, it is an important medium for consolidating the ties among different civilizations and values. Most importantly, sport has a key role to play in the endeavour to maintain world peace, release patriotic emotions and boom the economic prosperity.
③However, we shall not lose sight of negative impacts caused by popular events. For one thing, international sports events have become a tool of commercialism. Opponents of sports events claim that most sports competitions are usually financially rewarding and more profitable investment in sport manufacturing, retailing and promotions. Cheating and use of drug for economic rewards and personal prestige now afflicts the sports events. For another, sports events lead to a conflict between the advanced and less developed countries of the world as well as characteristics of the conflict between the Eastern and Western cultures.
④After evaluating both sides of popular sporting events, we may safely arrive at the conclusion that in spite of some negative impacts, the positive effects of sports far outweigh their harmful influences. Today, sports have developed globally and bring enjoyment and enrichment to the lives of billions of people. So, it is important that we seek ways by which sports can contribute to the achievement of peace for the entire world’s people.
