To be honest with one of the modern realities in China, there are no other options left for students attempting to meet challenges in work and life than learning English as a foreign language.  The lack of the talent for it may no longer be considered as an excuse not to take this ordeal seriously.  For that matter, what really matters is about practical necessities and not linguistic inclinations.

Learning any language is an experience characteristic of environment rather than genetics.  No one is born with the genius to communicate meaningfully, and this is one reason that talent does not count.  For one at an early age, it takes time even learning to use the mother tongue, let alone a foreign language that is out of the social context.  Later as a student, one begins being led to learn a second language like English, regardless of having such talent or not.  The bottom line is a common goal to learn this "lingo" in the hope of job satisfaction and job security, among other benefits.  Given that linguistic capabilities help, they are actually not essential. Consider, a talent without motivation would remain on earth only a gift from heaven, and yet only with a strong desire can one learn to speak, listen, speak and write in a foreign language.

Being able to use English has practical advantages when it comes to following the current trend in a world of globalization.  Talent being not the issue, the need to learn a foreign language for international communication is becoming increasingly important.  For instance, an ability to use English is like a passport to nearly anywhere.  Talent or not, many people, particularly students, are tempted to learn English.  Apparently there is nothing to lose in learning any foreign language.  Nevertheless, in the world as it is, there is a certain price to be paid, if the will being not strong enough.

Accordingly, it makes practical sense to learn English, a universal language, although not everyone should be gifted in linguistic specialties.  After all, patience is all that is required to get the job done gradually.  To make a difference in work and in life, a student cannot afford to miss one of the gateways on the road to success.
