Tourism has not only benefited but also harmed the development of many countries. What problems does it bring about? How can countries ensure that tourism benefits their own development?
The past decade has witnessed the staggering development of tourism the world over, and those countries that expanded their travel industries have benefited hugely from the development mainly with respect to their economy and cultural exchanges with other nations. However, there have been downsides.
Some of these countries have unfortunately suffered from the problems brought by the expansion. There are three main challenges. First and foremost, the irresponsible tourists’ actions and the excessive exploitation of natural resources during the development have brought about increasing amount of pollution. Moreover, the sheer number of visitors to some historical sites can make it difficult for authorities to preserve the cultural relics that are accessible to visits. Finally, international travel sometimes has caused prejudices rather than promoted understanding between different cultures. A main reason for this situation can be that some tourists, because of their ignorance of the local cultures, might act in ways that local people at tourist attractions find offensive. It is also true that there can be dishonest businesses and crimes aiming at foreign visitors at the tourist destination.
The issue is so complex that multiple solutions have to be introduced by the countries. First, relevant authorities should punish those who create pollution and optimize the development of natural sites by limiting the scale of touring programs. As far as the preservation of cultural heritage is concerned, the number of visitors to some special sites should be mandatorily reduced and limited. Taking into account cultural differences and potential prejudices, mass media and travel agencies should help tourists learn more about the local cultures at their destination countries while countries’ legal systems should strengthen legislation and the enforcement of laws to better protect foreign visitors from being cheated or taken advantage of during their traveling.
Clearly, there is no simple solution to the problems in discussion. However, if my proposed solutions/suggestions are implemented, these problems may be solved or at least improved eventually.
