  Part V:听力与口语训练

  段落1

One evening a young man in New York, who was known to be something of a musician, read one of his songs to a small group of his friends. The song was highly praised, but afterwards, one of his friends said, “I was very much interested in Jack’s music, but it was stolen from a book.” These words were repeated to Jack. Jack was very angry and asked for an apology. “Well,” said his friend, “I don’t often take back what I have said, but this time I must say I was mistaken. When I got back to my room, I looked in the book and found that the song was still there!”

  段落2

Tommy is my big black dog. He is so strong that he can carry me on his back. He likes to run and play with me. He likes to follow my father around the fields, too. One day, my father took off his coat and put it on the ground under a big tree. Tommy stood watching him. My father said, “Watch my coat, Tommy.”

Tommy sat down on the coat. My father forgot all about his coat and went home without it. Later in the evening, I missed my dog. I looked everywhere for him, calling, “Tommy, Tommy!” But Tommy didn’t come. Soon my father wanted something that was in his coat pocket. Then he remembered what he had done. He went back to the big tree. What do you think he saw? Tommy was sitting on the coat so that nobody could carry it away!

  Part VI:快速阅读

  Annoying(令人恼火的) Shadows(影子)

The soldiers(士兵) had just moved to the desert(沙漠) and as they had never been in such a place before, they had a lot to learn.

As there were no trees or buildings in the desert, it was, of course, very hard to hide their trucks from(藏匿) enemy planes. The soldiers were, therefore, given training in camouflage(伪装), which means ways of covering something so that the enemy cannot see where it is. They were shown how to paint their trucks in irregular(不规则的) patterns(图案) with pale(浅色的) green, yellow, and brown(棕色) paints(油漆) and then to cover them with nets(网) to which they had tied small pieces of cloth.

The driver who had the biggest truck went to(费了) a lot of trouble to camouflage(伪装) it. He spent several hours painting it, preparing a net and searching for some heavy rocks with which to hold the net down(把网压下来). When it was all finished, he looked proudly at his work and then went off to have his lunch.

But when he came back to the truck after he had had his meal, he was surprised and worried to see that his camouflage work was completely spoilt(毁掉) by the truck's shadow, which was growing longer and longer as the afternoon advanced(前进). He stood looking at it, not knowing what to do about it.

Soon an officer arrived and he too saw the shadow, of course.

"Well, "he shouted to the poor driver, "what are you going to do about it? If an enemy plane comes over, the pilot will at once know that there is a truck there."

"I know, sir," answered the soldier.

"Well, don't just stand there doing nothing!" said the officer.

"What shall I do, sir?" asked the poor driver.

"Get your spade(铲子) and throw some sand over the shadow, of course!" Answered the officer.
