Just because goods move, capitals move, ideas move and people move freely beyond borders, it does not follow there will be no national borders in the future. While globalization is in the making, doubts abound regarding its probability that this international trend can actually benefit all countries in many respects. Elimination of border controls will at least render it impossible for a country to control immigration and quarantine.
It is generally agreed that a country's people may live and work freely within its national boundary, but it can be a very different thing when it comes to doing so in foreign countries. Under the international law, passports or visas or other identity documents are required to cross borders. That is why most countries have some form of control
at airports, seaports and border posts to restrict movement of foreign persons into and out of a country. Naturally without this kind of limit, a country will find it difficult or even impossible to maintain social stability and national security. Although modern transportation and communication seem to give the impression that all cultures may emerge like a global culture, it is unrealistic to be blind to such problems as smuggling unauthorized persons for human slavery or prostitution. This situation was the same in the past as it is now, and is not likely to change in the future.
Quarantine measures will remain necessary even in the presence of globalization and this means national borders need to exist. To prevent the spread of exotic or infectious animals and plants, and occasionally humans, most countries choose to continue applying safety measures. It is not only about payments of exercise tax collected by customs officials but also about illegal drugs and arms, among other dangerous articles. Furthermore, there are some countries being hostile to each other, which means a militarized border zone seems indispensable to avoid armed conflicts. In short, the advantages of globalization may eventually be reduced to trade, investment, finance and labor. The rest, including the idea of a single world without borders, is fantasy or myth.
The logic may be that each country is permitted to define the conditions that have to be met by a person crossing the borders legally. Any case to the contrary is in violation of the the national law and the international law when that happens. So the bottom-line may be that, thanks to globalization and the philosophy of mutual benefits, people may move more freely between countries today than any time in the past, but national borders must always be respected in the time to come
