Essay: Overweight
By Jeenn Lee Hsieh
Nowadays overweight is becoming very like a common illness, affecting many people across the world, particularly in the developed and developing countries. This chronic disease, however, is said to be preventable if enough attention is paid to taking a balanced meal and doing physical exercise on a routine basis.
To begin with, eating badly contributes to obesity. For instance, those people who prefer junk food are likely to gain weight and become lazy. Obviously, they seem to eat anything that tastes good even when they are not hungry. This obsession with 'fashion' meals instead of traditional diets is such a bad habit that it may eventually lead to some deadly effects ranging from high blood pressure to heart attack to other diseases often associated with excessive calorie intake. No doubt, this is because the absence of natural food varieties, including vegetables and fruit characteristic of fiber nutrition. And it can be imagined that nothing is as sure to expand waistlines as over-dependence on ready-to-eat meals.
On the other hand, people do need to do sufficient physical exercise to stay fit, but this is probably not the case with some people overwhelmed by overweight. More often than not, fat persons may become too uncomfortable to be engaged in any physical activities. Such kind of physical inactivity plus an unhealthy diet may in turn make the bad situation even worse. The consequence is obesity, sometimes to the point of being morbid. Scientists have warned that morbid obesity can shorten one's life expectancy, adding that only by constantly doing physical exercise whatever, like playing balls or swimming, can one expect to remain in good health.
Accordingly, without eating a balanced meal and without doing sufficient physical exercise, there are always risks among people of becoming over-fat and being in bad shape in the long run. To be sure, treatments can be as simple as resorting to eating less and doing more physical exercise. Nevertheless sometimes for some people the will to reduce weight is not strong enough, the body being too weak to either resist fast food or too immovable to even go for a walk.
